The simplicity of presence

Everything and everyone has a presence. Presence goes beyond just a body. It is the energy that emanates from everyone and everything.

Even though we spend a lifetime labelling and refining that presence it is in fact very simple in its essence. It just is. Walk up to a tree and what do you see but a tree. If you take the time to tune in you can feel its presence, its energy. It is simple and to the point. You can feel the same thing about person no matter who they are. You can see the man or woman and decide who they are by giving them the “once over”. You can also take a moment to feel who that person really is. What you deeply feel and what you superficially see might not be the same thing or maybe it is. Whatever the case, beyond the complexity of that person because of all the reasons you can think of, there is a simple being, the same simple child that was borne into this life. Then they become complicated because of their acquired upbringing, beliefs, choice of lifestyle, etc. Underneath this facade we are still the same simple beings that we were borne as.

I have spent half a lifetime exploring the simplicity of my being. When I discovered Zen, the expression of simplicity became evident. It is the enormous number of belief systems on this planet that complicates life. In fact every single person on this planet has their own belief system. Some keep it to themselves. Some scream that you must follow their belief that is the only true belief. But is there a one and only true belief? Throughout history systems of belief have developed and have vanished as one generation passes into another. Some tightly hold onto their beliefs over thousands of years, sometimes fighting wars to maintain these beliefs. While others dismiss these beliefs as being nonsense and are none the worse for it. God never struck them down as was warned! And so the struggle exists over who is going to dominate with God being the escape goat in each case. God must feel like He’s being torn asunder with so much disagreement as to who He is and what He has to say!

So how can I say that we are simple? Just take a moment to look inside. Empty your mind of everything that you have been told about yourself, of who you are supposed to be. Empty your mind of everything you have told yourself about yourself. Then see what’s there. If you have looked honestly and allowed the dust of conflict and judgement to settle, you will more than likely see nothing. Take all your beliefs away whether imposed or self-imposed and there will be nothing left. There is only the simplicity of your presence. That is what meditation is. That is where peace is.

Feel the presence

Wait silently with anything, and you will discover a new phenomenon which was always there, but of which you were not alert – not aware of it. Your mind will become completely silent as you feel the presence of the ever-living existence. You will be just a part in it, just a note in the great symphony. No burden, no tension...the drop has fallen into the ocean. ~ Osho
