A question of sanity

Mankind has created an extremely complex world because of believing what is in hers/his remarkably complex mind. According to Wikipedia, there are 196 countries and roughly 6,500 languages and 4,200 religions in the world today. Every one of these minds continuously experiences a multitude of thoughts circulating within their very many brains. The number of 50,000 thoughts per day has been suggested to occur within each individual mind. Multiply that times the approximately 7 billion minds living on the planet and the figure of 350 trillion thoughts per day can be heard circulating around the world. Pity one who can read thoughts. Although most thoughts are repeated ad nauseam, some are actually original, begging for attention. Perhaps that mind wants to create a new business, a new kind of politics or even a new religion just to add to the complexity of this planet. The possibilities constructed by the mind are endless. So many differences and yet so many similarities existing simultaneously. That anyone remains sane with this constant bombardment of thoughts remains a mystery. That anyone questions why there are so many who go insane by our standards of what is supposed to be normal behavior is an even greater mystery. To say this planet is going insane could be construed as being a valid statement.

To top it off we have a tendency to take those trillions of thoughts seriously enough to want to harm each other, create wars and dominant one another simply because we prefer our thoughts over someone else’s. Yes there are comedians who poke fun at this variety of thought differences and we have a good laugh. At least some people laugh while others threaten retaliation. When it comes to religion especially, the more fundamentalist the outlook the more serious the temperament. For that matter few religions are capable of laughing at themselves. Laughing at each other is considered more normal behavior.

To an alien looking at our planet from afar, we might appear to be a peaceful planet with all that lush beautiful greenery and expansive blue oceans. From a distance, Earth seems like a paradise spinning within an incomprehensibly immense universe. While many on this planet may feel that the heavenly bliss of the Garden of Eden is here, too many who live in poverty or in a war torn country feel like they are living in hell, all because of all those crazy thoughts.

Man is supposed to be superior because of his ability to think. Yes so much has been created, yet so much has been destroyed because of thoughts. One person claims to love something or someone, while another claims to hate the very same thing. How is it possible to maintain one hundred per cent peace in this world when there are so many opposite responses to a single thought? It only takes one violent dissenter to disrupt the peace and there appears to be many of those in the world.

Mystics say live in the present and simply watch your thoughts. Do not believe your thoughts. Yet, with the exception of the few who have explored and experienced spiritual realms or scientists who have uncovered the physical mysteries of the universe, those thoughts are all that we know. They are the sum of everything that we are, that we have become. And because of that we have become insane as a species on this planet. We have become unnatural. Animals have become unnatural. Then we wonder why we do the things we do? We wonder why we kill each other? The reasons are so simple and yet so remarkably complicated.

There are times when my mind is racing about thinking of all sorts of nonsense that I sometimes believe is true, because why shouldn’t it be true? So I get out of bed and sit for a moment to remove myself from lying in bed watching thoughts. Just to change the energy. I have learned how to sit in silence for periods of time. It is so peaceful and I wonder if it is possible to do this all the time. But then I need to do this or that and thoughts arrive about this or that and the silence is broken. They say an enlightened person has gone beyond the mind and no longer thinks. They live in silence; they live in peace. Their presence does what it needs to do but no longer thinks about it. Is it possible for all of us to live that way? Or am I just dreaming as my mind thinks these interesting thoughts?

Feel the presence

Wait silently with anything, and you will discover a new phenomenon which was always there, but of which you were not alert – not aware of it. Your mind will become completely silent as you feel the presence of the ever-living existence. You will be just a part in it, just a note in the great symphony. No burden, no tension...the drop has fallen into the ocean. ~ Osho
